At Flux Sports Therapy we assess, treat and advise on a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries; and not just sports related. In fact, some of the most common issues we treat are neck pain and back pain which are often work related whether it’s from physical labour, being tied to a desk or in the car too often.

These types of pain or injury are considered chronic injuries (gradual onset) and generally result from prolonged overuse, sedentary work/lifestyle or poor bio-mechanics. This can then lead to postural problems, repetitive strains, persistent aches, arthritis, tendonitis etc. As mentioned, back pain and neck pain are two of the largest issues in this category that we regularly treat.

The other type of injury is known as acute (sudden onset) and generally result from an immediate impact, over-stretch, twist, turn or fall. These are often accompanied with immediate pain, swelling, bruising or loss of movement. Acute injuries are most commonly sprains or strains; a sprain being an injury to a ligament and a strain being an injury to a muscle or tendon.

If you suspect you have a severe acute injury such as a fracture or fully ruptured muscle/ligament/cartilage (symptoms can be intense pain, hearing a loud crack or pop, extreme loss of movement, severe joint instability, severe bruising, impaired motor control) then you should seek medical advice first. If you have sustained a head injury you should seek immediate medical support.

Acute Injury

Acute injuries can often be aided by applying the P.R.I.C.E. principles and should be applied as early as possible and continued for the next 24-72 hours. They are the key components required to prevent further injury, limit swelling, decrease pain and help the healing process. When applied correctly they can significantly reduce the recovery time needed for an injury.

An acute injury can only be treated once the pain and swelling has subsided. This normally takes between 24-72 hours when following application of the PRICE principles. If you would like to book an appointment please click here.

Chronic Injury

Chronic injuries are onset over a period of time from overuse, so the P.R.I.C.E. principles do not apply. Heat can be applied to relax and loosen the overused area, which should also provide some pain relief. Resting the injured area can also relieve symptoms but without a proper assessment and treatment plan the symptoms are likely to restart when returning your regular activity.

A chronic injury can be treated immediately. If you would like to book an appointment please click here.
